Introduction 🌟

The 11 January this year, I successfully passed the AZ-900 : Microsoft Fundamentals with a score of 887/990 !

This was my first certification. Even though it’s a basic certification, it can be a challenge for someone who has never learned cloud concepts and has no background in Azure services or the Azure Portal.

In this article, I will show you the roadmap I used to pass the exam on my first try. I’m writing this article, because if you are a bit stressed like me you searched about some ressources and happened to find some redditers such as this post

I have been working for a company for 2 months (I have a Master i Cloud-Services and Operations) and studied for 2 weeks.

How can this exam be as piss easy as everyone says? I have done the practice exams and it is hard as hell to remember everything and it seems like people pass it with like 5 minutes of studying.

  • From a redditer/redditor (first search I did on Google..). This can be a bit intimidating at first πŸ‘». πŸ‘»

My opinion about this certification πŸ“
#

My personal opinion is that the AZ-900 is a non-technical certification that can be achieved by studying consistently over 2 to 3 months if you’re truly a novice.

Basically it’s something that prepares to take the other exams by ensuring you know what Azure contains. (From another Redditor 😄 )

I personally studied alongside my school work and my sandwich course (a work-study program). I focused for about 3 weeks and passed it, but I already had a background in Infrastructure as Code and some basics about the Azure Portal.

Note that this is my roadmap, and it may have better materials that I haven’t found, or newer materials! Feel free to reach out to me and share any cool materials you’ve used.

Adam Marczak - Azure for Everyone
#

This is literally the BEST resources you can watch about the Azure Fundamentals concepts. The key concepts are really explained smoothly. And it covers every materials you need to see in short video.

Here is the Azure 900 course introduction :

AZ-900 | Microsoft Azure Fundamentals Full Course, Free Practice Tests, Website and Study Guides

The course is divided in 39 episodes. Even if the course was made 3 years ago it’s still valuable in 2025. In fact, Azure made a lot of changes about the menus.

In addition to the YouTube videos, Adam also provides a website where you can find tests on each subject, cheat sheets, and more!

Note that the tests are good but much easier than the real exam, though they are still valuable for preparing you for the types of questions.

There are some courses/notions that have some changes or are going to be deprecated here is the list :

  • Episode 32 : Azure Blueprints will be deprecated in favor of InfraAsCode. (Episode 32)
  • Episode 25 : Azure Identity Service has been renamed and reshaped by Microsoft Entra ID
  • Episode 17 : Azure Serverless concepts except Azure Function are removed from exam since may 2022.

Otherwise, all the courses concepts are up to date, or very similar to the current state of Azure !

So check his Youtube Channel - !

As you study this course, I suggest you take a book and take notes on the concepts. That’s how I learned faster.

Inside Cloud and Security - Azure Fundamentals course
#

Another very good material is this 2 hours course that I have used in my final day before the exam to summarize every keypoints.

I don’t think that it at your first choice learning ressources despite this is a course of quality, but this course resume a lot of subjects and is up to date (2024).

Microsoft Material
#

As expected, the Microsoft official material is also valuable and can be used to learn for zero. Even if personally I used it more as a reminder for some notions certain concepts I didn’t feel completely comfortable with.

Exams Resources : Test your Knowledge ! πŸ’‘
#

Once you are ready and feel comfortable with the learning part, you can test yourself with sample questions I found useful. I ranked them in order from easiest to hardest !

Practice test by Microsoft
#

The practice test provided by Microsoft is a great way to familiarize yourself with the basics and learn by doing. However, the questions tend to be too easy and repetitive, which might not provide enough challenge as you progress.

Whizlab free quiz
#

The Whizlab free practice test can be a great way to boost your confidence in your knowledge. In fact, Whizlab offers one free test with 30 questions.

I would rate it as a medium-difficulty test, as the questions can vary from being very easy to somewhat imprecise, depending on the context.

Exams Topics
#

Exams Topics is one of the most well-known websites for training for the certifications you’re aiming for. This website offers 110 free questions that closely match the structure and content of the actual exams.

The website works by providing practice questions, but the answers can sometimes be approximate. Make sure to check the comment to see if the result of the question is controversial or not, or to get more informations about the subject

I do not recommend paying to access the additional questions behind the paywall. 110 questions are enough to understand how the questions work.

Here is the direct-link to the samples 😄

Inside Cloud and Security test
#

The Inside Cloud and Security test is related to the 2 hours course from above. It allows you to test your skills, but I think it’s the last thing you should do, as this test is challenging and closely mirrors the difficulty of the actual certification exam!

It consists of 100 questions, and the test doesn’t change, so when you take it, make sure to complete all 100 questions in one go. This way, you’ll be practicing your knowledge rather than relying on your memory.

You can find the link right here

Additional ressources
#

If the materials I have used are not really as you please, here are some additionnal ressources I didn’t use but I know from people that this is quality content.

John Savill’s Technical Training - AZ 900 Course
#

Although I didn’t use it, I need to mention John Savill’s course, which is a very comprehensive guide and a very detailed course.

I think this guide will provide you with precise information on specific topics, while Marczak’s guide offers a more concise overview of key concepts, making it ideal for those who prefer a quicker, more focused summary.

Youtube sample quizz
#

The Tech Blackboard offers a series of quiz-style videos designed to help you revise key Azure concepts. These videos are a great way to test your knowledges and prepare for certifications like AZ-900 in a more interactive and engaging way.

Here is a sample with the first video of the playlist :
